Information on usage of Sontheim mtAPI (SIECA132.DLL), Version 6.x

The Sontheim mtAPI is a unified multithread API to access various CAN Adapters made by Sontheim Industrie Elektronik GmbH (SiE). This does include PCI adapers as well as CANUSB and other interfaces. The interface allows to access the CAN from several threads within one application as well as to have several applications running data to/from the CAN interface.

The following Windows Systems are supported:
- Windows 2000
- Windows XP (32 Bit)
- Windows Vista (32 Bit)

There is no support for Windows 9x Systems

The CANUSB-driver which is installed with this version of the MT_API is no longer supported by applications which are using the Single Thread API (CANAPI.DLL).

To reenable these applications to work together (one after the other) with applications using the mtAPI, during the Setup several additional files have been copied to subfolders of the program installation directory, which is typicall c:\<program files>\Sontheim\mtAPI\<>

c:\<program files>\Sontheim\MT_Api\Driver\STCanAPI_GlueLayer
==> Please copy this file into the program directory and/or the Windows central location for sharedd dlls, to enable your application based on stAPI to work with the new USB driver and current firmware on the CANUSB (42 or higher). This Glue CANAPI.DLL is directing all requests to the CANUSB to the mtAPI. This allows to some extent the coexistence of two stAPI applications. There are limitations to this appoach and limitations in this mapping. Be careful using this approach and ensure sufficient testin, before releasing/usage of this solution

c:\<program files>\Sontheim\MT_Api\Driver\CanUSB\*.*
==> All files to install the USB driver for CANUSB on a Windows System.

c:\<program files>\Sontheim\MT_Api\Driver\PowerPCI\*.*
==> All files to install the driver for PowerPCI on a Windows System.

c:\<program files>\Sontheim\MT_Api\Documentation\*.*
This file as well as Documentation for the API. Associated files are in the subfolders Header anf Libraries

Warning regarding use of software products

(1) SiE products are not designed with components and testing for a level of reliability suitable for use in or in connection with surgical implants or as critical components in any life support systems whose failure to perform can reasonably be expected to cause significant injury to a human.

(2) In any application, including the above, reliability of operation of the software products can be impaired by adverse factors, including but not limited to fluctuations in electrical power supply, computer hardware malfunctions, computer operating system software fitness, fitness of compilers and development software used to develop an application. Installation Errors, software and hardware compatibility problems, malfunctions of failures of electronic monitoring or control devices transient failures of electronic systems (hardware and/or software), unanticipated uses or misuses, or errors on the part of the user or applications designer (adverse factors such as these hereafter collectively termed system failures). Any application where a system failure would create a risk of harm to property or persons (including the risk of bodily injury and death) should not be reliant solely upon one form of electronic system due to the risk of system failure. To avoid damage, injury or death, the user or application designer must take reasonable prudent steps to protect against system failures, including but not limited to back-up or shut down mechanisms. Because each end-user system is customized and differs from SiEs testing platforms and because a user or application designer may use SiE products in combination with other products in a manner not evaluated or contemplated by SiE. The user or application designer is ultimately responsible for verifying and validating the suitability of SiE products whenever SiE products are incorporated in a system or application, including, without limitation, the appropriate design, process and safety level of such system or application.
